Bed bugs aren’t a sign of poor housekeeping. They don’t care whether a hotel is a budget roadside motel or a five-star resort. Any high-turnover sleeping environment carries risk. Hotel rooms cycle through dozens of guests each month, and it only takes one infested suitcase set down in the wrong spot to introduce them to a room.
Our post on how do you get bed bugs covers how they spread and what environments attract them. Good background to have before traveling, especially if you haven’t dealt with them before.
How They Hitchhike Back Home
Bed bugs don’t fly or jump. They move by crawling, and they’re very good at getting into whatever you’ve left near the bed. A bag on the hotel floor or set on the mattress is the most common way they end up going home with guests.
Once they’re in your luggage, they can go weeks without feeding. By the time the first signs show up at home: unexplained bites, spots on the sheets. The hotel room you stayed in may have been two or three trips ago. Our overview of what are bed bugs explains their biology and why they’re so effective at spreading undetected.
To limit the risk when traveling:
- Keep luggage on the luggage rack, away from the bed and any upholstered furniture
- Check the rack itself before placing bags on it; the frame and straps are common hiding spots
- Store shoes in a sealed bag rather than leaving them on the floor
- Wash and dry all travel clothing on high heat as soon as you get home
Your Hotel Bed Bug Inspection Checklist
When you check into a hotel room, take five minutes before unpacking to do a quick inspection. Set your luggage in the bathroom while you check the room. Hard surfaces are far less likely to harbor them than carpet, upholstery, or bedding. A thorough inspection of a hotel room for bed bugs doesn’t need to be exhaustive, but it does need to cover the right locations.
For a step-by-step walkthrough with photos, our guide on how to check for bed bugs covers both the visual signs and physical evidence to look for.
What to Check on the Mattress and Headboard

Start at the mattress and work outward. Pull back the bedding and check the seams along the edges and any folded fabric. That’s where they concentrate when they’re at rest. You’re looking for:
- Live bugs: flat, reddish-brown, roughly the size of an apple seed
- Fecal spotting along seams: small dark dots or smearing that doesn’t wipe off cleanly
- Shed skins left behind as nymphs grow, translucent and shell-like
- Rust-colored spots on the fabric, from crushed bugs during the night
After the mattress, move to the headboard. It’s one of the most consistently overlooked spots in a room inspection, and one of the most common places we find activity. If it’s attached to the wall, check the edges and any gap where it meets the surface. Do the same with the nightstands: open the drawers and check the back edges.
Our article on signs of bed bugs has photos of each indicator. Review it before your trip so you know exactly what you’re looking for when you pull back that first corner of bedding.
What to Do If You Find Bed Bugs
If your inspection turns up any of the signs listed above, don’t unpack. Notify the front desk immediately and request a room change. When you move to a new room, ask that it not be adjacent to or directly above or below the original, since bed bugs can spread through wall voids and shared spaces. Inspect the new room before you open any bags.
If you’ve already unpacked, seal your clothing and items in plastic bags before repacking. When you get home, keep luggage outside until you’ve checked it thoroughly. Wash everything that can be laundered on high heat, and run the dryer on high for at least 30 minutes.
Preventing Them from Coming Home
Even a careful inspection isn’t a guarantee. If you get home from a trip and start noticing bites you can’t explain or spots on your sheets that weren’t there before, act on it quickly. Bed bug infestations are significantly easier to resolve when caught early, before they’ve had time to spread from the bedroom into other areas of the house.
